EVERYTHING YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU ENTER A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP - R.MANOJ, RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT COUNSELOR, CHENNAI

               Most people especially in their adolescence and early adult hood are vulnerable to romantic relationships. The sense of “being in love” or “being loved” is so enthralling that many become easy prey. The spontaneous and emotional decision that they take in excitement without understanding the practicalities associated with relationships, results in failures which has a long lasting impact on their personal life, self confidence and decision making skills. Here are some of the essential informations that everyone should know before they enter in to romantic relationships.
  1. Built trustworthy relationships
  2. Be clear in who you are, what your values are, what you want in relationships and what you are willing to give and vice versa
  3. Be emotional in relationship, but logical in taking decisions in confirming the status of relationship
  4. Be careful not to get into any relationship just for the sake of it or just because you feel left out in the crowd. Also be sure that you are not getting in to any relationship just for excitement, the thrill associated with it or to vile away your boredom.  
  5. Do not get into relationship based on flattery, coercion, force, persuasion, or emotional blackmailing by any person. Such people are bound to have some ulterior motives for building the relationship.
  6. Be careful in not being carried away either dominance, submissiveness or victimization approach of any person
  7. Before making any commitment make sure that you have enough reliable information about the other persons past, family background and other vital areas which you prioritize in relationships.
  8. Take reasonable time to come to a conclusion about the status of the relationship. But once you have come to a conclusion convey it to the other person immediately.  
  9. Maintain good personal communications. Understand that listening is as important as talking in effective communication
  10. Understand that mutual acknowledgment encouragements and appreciations is an essential part of any relationship. But realize that constructive criticism also has a significant role in any good relationship and there should be a balance among all these essential factors of relationship
  11. Be careful not to extend your conversation to odd hours of the night. Avoid carrying the subject towards the physical or sexual front. Also avoid activities such as sexting or chat with sublime sexual content.
  12. Limit meeting in privacy to public places where there is the presence of others. Avoid late night meetings or meetings extending to late night, so that you don’t get carried away sexually
  13. Retain your personal space and identity within relationship. Don’t involve in excessive compromise or sacrifices. Take your freedom of choices and decisions in your personal life and allow the other person the same
  14. Avoid developing dependency on the person or the relationship. Don’t expect that the person you are with is only there to do something for you or it’s his duty to be with you always
  15. Just because you are in a relationship don’t avoid your friends or forget to keep in touch with them. Try to have a balance in the time you spend with your partner and that you spend with the other significant people in your life.
  16. Be assertive. You should be able to say a “no” when there is any demand from the other person, which is against your values, interests and wellbeing
  17. Never give in to the demands of the other person just to stay in the relationship. This may lead to the partner using your for their own gains and then quitting once they feel that your utility is over.
  18. Be open with your needs and expectations. Don’t expect the other person to satisfy your needs by understanding them by themselves or from the cues you give them
  19. Be willing to quit if you reasonable needs are not getting satisfied or the relationship becomes demanding
  20. Understand that happiness is a personal choice. Nobody can guarantee happiness or comfort and you are not the person responsible or the one who can guarantee happiness or comfort to the other
  21. Understand that true reliable emotional relationship comes from knowing each other over a period of time after you go through various good bad and challenging situations
  22. Make sure that your relationship is not becoming an impediment in personal growth. Good relationships are the ones that can foster your growth.
  23. If you experience a breach of trust once become cautious, but if it happens the next time better think twice about going forward with the relationship
